WAN-IFRA Newspaper Design

WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES

The objective of this workshop is to introduce the participants to the best practices in visual journalism, to broaden their understanding of design, to improve the quality of their work on a day to day basis, and how to do the most with the least. They will be given a fresh perspective and a new set of tools they can use when designing for their publications.

WORKSHOP LEADER

 Lucie Lacava is a design consultant and a past president of SND (2001). She is a founding member of the francophone chapter of SND, based in Paris. 

She was a design director at the The Gazette newspaper before founding her company Lacava Design Inc., a firm offering visual strategies for print and digital media. Since then, she has given visual personality to more than 80 publications across Canada, the United States, Latin America, Europe, and the United Arab Emirates. She has received more than 100 national and international awards in her career, including the SND's “World's Best Designed Newspaper" award for three of her projects.

She has given workshops at the Poynter Institute for Media Studies, the American Press Institute, and as a visiting faculty member at the Universidad Catolica de Chile.

In 2010 the Society for News Design honoured Lucie Lacava with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

PROGRAMME

Day One

How to design the best front pages for your paper. 

• Presentation will be given on front page design and how to get the most out of the grid, typography, colour usage, visuals, and story structure.
• Presentation with examples from various newspapers, tabloid and broadsheet, from regular news day to breaking news presentation. 
• Hands on/Group work selecting stories and photos and designing the front page of their newspaper applying the principles learned.
• The afternoon will be mostly hands on. Trainer will go from team to team to give guidance and feedback. At the end of the day the participants will present their page and receive constructive feedback.

Day Two

How to design the best feature and news feature pages for your paper. 

• Presentation on how to be creative with little or no budget, designing with type, colour palettes, white space, visual storytelling and alternative story formats. Inspirational examples will be presented.
• Participants will analyze pages from their publication and will have the opportunity to work on the design of their feature pages. Presentations will be given at the end of the day, followed by constructive critiques.
