Throughout history great sculptors have expressed the spiritual through their art, leaving for posterity many statues of great size, beauty and artistic scope, the majority of which are dedicated to religious figures, gods or prophets. China leads the world in the number of statues of more than 30 metres in height with 19, most representing Buddha or Guanyin, the Buddhist goddess of mercy. Here we take a look at those 19, and set them in the context of the world’s tallest statues. For purposes of comparison, plinths, pedestals and supports are excluded.
