Gulf News Design Director Miguel Gomez wrote exclusively for www.newspaperdesign.ning.com about the success story
Best in overall design, Newspaper
This is a great award for us because it recognizes the talent and effort that the entire Design team puts everyday to exercise visual journalism and to offer readers appealing packages.
Best in infographics Magazine.
This two infographics are part of a projects called How stuff works… Basically the idea is to have a fix space every two weeks where we can show readers how different thinks occur.
This is our own initiative coordinated by Dwyyn R. Trazo, Senior infographist at Gulf News and any member of the staff can contribute. In this case, the two graphics awarded were produced by Dwynn.
The topics are open and based on what each infographist finds interesting.
It is amazing to make the Gold and Silver in this category and a deserved recognition.
Best in editorial, Breaking News, Newspaper
This coverage is a clear example on how things can work when you have a coordinated team collaborating to achieve the same goal.
The death of Osama Bin Laden was a huge story for us and since we learned about it the complete newsroom started putting data together and coordinating efforts to come with a complete, extensive coverage.
Once we decided all the angles of the coverage each page was layered out by the Design team to get the proper balance between text and visuals, to make it work as a complete package involving not only news, but many storytelling techniques and genres like pictures, illustrations, infographics, editorials and analysis. The story was big and to keep the pace, we made the same exercise on the second day.
