South China Morning Post stole the show by winning two gold , four silver and six award of excellence in the fourth edition of the international newspaper design competition conducted by Asia’s first newspaper design site www.newspaperdesign.in

GOLD

South China Morning Post

(Hong Kong) Judges Comment The execution of this page, from the organizing of the information to the choice of color palette to the overall design, provides one of the clearest views of large-scale climate change and extreme weather in China that a print format could ever hope to demonstrate. The use of easily-contrasted, high-visibility colors not only makes periods of drought and flooding obvious, but it also make it possible to use no color at all to represent a year of no extreme weather — and the fact that is happening very infrequently throughout this graphics drives home the point that climate extremes across China are the norm. A headline like “Apocalypse Now” can be over-the-top without the content on the page to back it up, but in this case the headline introduces, and supports, the thorough research and graphic design that the page showcases.

Judges Comment This South China Morning Post infographic is about how all countries stack against each other in terms of vaccination rate and what are the conditions required to enter Hong Kong. This entry is a great example of how to pack a huge amount of information and make it easy to understand by presenting it in a clear yet original format. This graphic does not seek to follow pre determined formulas. While the colour palette and the typography usage are understated, the overall visual effect is impactful and aesthetically pleasing. The SCMP keeps on raising the bar and leads the way in finding innovative solutions for the visual representation of data. This entry clearly deserves gold.

Judges Comment After spending the day reviewing submissions, it is astonishing how much great work the South China Morning Post manages to produce on an annual basis without falling into common visualization tropes. Each experience is unique without forcing the reader through an ardious task to understand the complex wave of information being presented. Three of the four pieces shown here deftly display how the pandemic is impacting society as a whole. The fourth is a touching tribute to the late Darren Long, whose visual legacy will be seen in the work produced by the Morning Post for years to come.
